Individuals Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such drugs must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
