Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.
The team of pioneers also included experts in different industries.
