An Prediction Market Trader Made $Nearly Half a Million on Wagers on the Ouster of Maduro.
An individual earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the event.
Changing Odds in Forecasts
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January increased in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been seized.
A single trader, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Market Signals Before Public Statement
Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
But the odds had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity right before the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said Dennis Kelleher.
A handful of other traders also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.
Regulatory Scrutiny Grows
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week would prevent public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, with users able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs.
Prediction markets were examined under the previous administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.
Insider trading is illegal in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.
A company executive for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
